Guess what? My first gift guide of the season is o Guess what? My first gift guide of the season is out and it’s all about cookbooks. I found 25 cookbooks released in 2025. Each tells their own story but a singular theme arose: food as touchstone to bring together generations across culture, geography and dislocation. Food as shared heritage. Food as identity.

It’s an ethos.

What a fun dinner @7paintings_com at Mountain View What a fun dinner @7paintings_com at Mountain View’s @theameswellhotel !!! With a talking Mona Lisa as our guide, @lotusabrams_writes and I dove into one meaty and one vegetarian meal while tripping on the light — and sound and touch and taste — fantastic.

Art fans will enjoy the sensory shift and the ever-changing table scape meant lively and delighted conversation.

My favorite part was our chef, who “dropped in” on us as an avatar to explain our courses. So fun!!

I think I’m ready to start recipe testing from M I think I’m ready to start recipe testing from My Cambodia, @nite_nite_nite new Khmer cookbook. I spent a good hour at New May Wah, reading every fish sauce label and am happy to say: I found Mud Fish Sauce! Plus fresh galangal, lime leaves and lemongrass, Thai Seasoning sauce and multiple kinds of palm sugar.
It’s about to smell (and taste) amazing in my house. Happy weekend!!
The sambal and garlic chili oil from @everiday_foods are going to be tested, too, and both are made in Thailand.

Ahi crudo with orange-vanilla vinaigrette? Yes! It Ahi crudo with orange-vanilla vinaigrette? Yes! It was the special the night I visited @wolfinthewoodsmissionhills in San Diego. And the vinaigrette reminded me of Zihuantanejo’s @_angustina_ and their octopus taco with vanilla. It adds just enough sweetness to balance the acid. Delish.

Yummy gluten-free lentil “doughnuts” at San Ra Yummy gluten-free lentil “doughnuts” at San Rafael’s Suvai. Impressive dosa and other Southern Indian dishes, some I’ve never had before. Other than the glaring flourescent lights, a treat!

A day spent thrifting with Barbara and @majavthale A day spent thrifting with Barbara and @majavthaler found us meeting up with more family at the self-proclaimed ‘oldest vegetarian restaurant in the world’ for lunch. (It’s been in operation for 127 years, which is old, but …really?)
A South Indian-style thali was big enough for two, and the eggplant spicy enough for me to rank it as the second spiciest thing I’ve ever eaten in Switzerland. (Kaff-kaff!)
Naan and papadum served side-by-side, plus individual bowls of rice. And good coffee before dessert.
